Canan's Puppies - Week 5

Week 8

Geez, this week is flying already.  I started to think to myself, "you're only running a day late in updating this week in the puppy's lives" until I started to count and saw how many days had passed since Monday which marks the day they were born.  So much is going on with the puppies and the workload has increased dramatically, so the days fly quickly by.

Canan is definitely at the end of her nursing career with this litter.  She'll go in for just a few minutes twice or so a day.  She doesn't want to lay down anymore to let them nurse...she stands there while the puppies reach up and nurse for those few minutes.  They have teeth now and I'm sure that's hard on her trying to continue nursing them but she has been a real trooper nursing all these puppies day after day.

On the other hand, I'm now feeding them 3 times a day myself.  The puppies are in transition right now...it'll take them a few days to etch in their minds that *I* am the one who will be able to quell those rumblings in their tummies.  Since I raw feed my dogs, I've been grinding up chicken wings for the puppies and mixing that with fresh goats milk.  Sometimes I'll add some fresh eggs, yesterday I added some cottage cheese, diversifying their nutrition a little.  In the days and weeks ahead, I'll add some new things but for now it's predominately ground chicken wings and fresh goats milk.  There's one little puppy that my daughter has named "Euclid" who no matter whether they're all sleeping or awake, is always, always, always the first puppy to the bowl.  He's so cute when he gets his fill because he'll kind of walk around for a few minutes like a drunken sailor until he gets his bearings lol.  And THEN, he starts messing with the other puppies, wanting to play, instigating, interrupting, anything to get them to goof around with him.

There's one female my oldest son has really bonded to that he's named "Nubbette" (don't ask me how the children come up with these names...it's a rollar coaster ride as to which name they will pick for each puppy lol).  She's incredibly sweet and cuddly...there's something about her that just grabs at the heartstrings and causes you to want to hold her for hours.  Another female is a little more outgoing.  She doesn't have a name yet (I'll have to pick a name before the children do lol) but once or twice a day she'll sit at the side of the Xpen and whine.  Sometimes I'll pick her up and she'll lay in my lap and go to sleep...last night I picked her up and let her play with little Bulan a little.  He's definitely in love with her and it was absolutely adorable to watch her 'think' she was as big as he is (she's about the size of his head and half his neck...that's it lol)...goofing around with him, enjoying her time pretending she's a big girl lol.  When they were done playing, I put her back into the Xpen where her siblings were all passed out and she joined them in short order.

As you can tell from some of these things I share, the puppies personalities are just starting to emerge.  This is the part that I love the most...learning who they are as it begins to show...projecting this infant personality into a full grown Kangal.

Thank goodness there's a balance between the workload increasing and the fun that increases at the same time.  The puppies are starting to recognize us and it is absolutely precious to see when they notice we've walked into the room.  They sit there and stare and my heart fills with the awesome responsibility of nurturing these beautiful animals that will soon grace the homes of their 'forever' families.

I have alot of animals on my farm but none of them 'get' to me like these Kangals do.  As I talk with the owners who are anticipating the arrival of their new babies, it takes me back to the time when years ago, I counted the days until my new puppy arrived to begin his/her life with me.  I can't help but share their excitement...I know the journey they are about to undertake and it rivals and surpasses (in good ways) any they've ever had before.

It's no wonder I love being a part of passing forward the gift of this Kangal Dog to them.

:).
He said, "Quit staring at me!  I'm busy practicing my ferocious Kangal intimidation look!"

She said, "You really look silly
He said, "Well, is this better?"

She said, "hmmmmmm...nah, that looks stupid too
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...shadddup!" He tells her
Don't you EVER speak to me in that tone of voice again!", She says.

Oh my.

Guess she told him!  ;)

Stunning.

Absolutely stunning.
